How teaching concepts helps pupils to learn the curriculum

There are several reasons why focusing on teaching the concepts is helpful:

• They are the ‘big ideas’ that are the gateway into the subjects

• They act as ‘holding baskets’ for a lot of information

• They make it easier for our pupils to know and understand more of the curriculum over time

• Finally, they make our curriculum planning more straightforward!

In this short recording I share the research that shows that teaching the concepts means that learning is likely to be deeper.

Concepts are the engines of the subjects and to help make it manageable, I also show some quick ways of identifying them.
